Digital Photography Tip No.1 – Avoid your Auto Setting

I thought it might be an idea to issue regular digital photography tips – everyone loves a photo!!

Whether you have a simple point and shoot, a prosumer mid-range or a professional DSLR – take the jump and change from the dreaded Auto mode! Experiment, experiment and experiment. A quick summary:

Auto – avoid whenever possible
Shutter Priority – for when you need to capture the action eg sport
Aperture Priority – for when you need to control depth of field (how much of the shot is in focus) eg portraits.
P or Programmed Auto – for when you don’t have time to fiddle with settings eg capturing city life and the shot just presents itself.

At the very least use the camera’s preset modes eg portrait, landscape, macro etc.

Finally – actually read your manual…;-)
